You don't have to keep pushing through

You're tired. Not the kind of tired that a good night's sleep fixes — the kind that comes from constantly bracing yourself, overthinking every conversation, and waiting for something to go wrong.

Maybe anxiety shows up as a mind that won't switch off, a knot in your stomach before ordinary situations, or a habit of avoiding things that feel too risky or too much. Maybe it looks fine from the outside, but inside you're exhausted by the effort of keeping it together.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone — and you don't have to keep managing it on your own.

What we help with

Our therapists work with adults experiencing a wide range of anxiety-related difficulties, including:

  • Generalised anxiety and persistent worry

  • Social anxiety and fear of judgement

  • Health anxiety

  • Panic attacks and panic disorder

  • Work-related stress and burnout

  • Perfectionism and fear of failure

  • Low confidence rooted in anxiety

If you're not sure whether what you're experiencing fits neatly into a category, that's okay. Many people come to us saying they just feel anxious — and that's enough to start.

How we work

At Chapter One Psychology, our therapists draw on approaches that have strong evidence behind them for anxiety, including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — helps you identify the thought patterns and behaviours that keep anxiety going, and build more helpful ways of responding.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — rather than fighting anxious thoughts, ACT helps you change your relationship with them, so they have less power over what you do.

Psychodynamic therapy — explores how earlier experiences and unconscious patterns may be shaping your anxiety today, helping you understand yourself at a deeper level.

Your therapist will work with you to find the approach — or combination of approaches — that fits your needs. There's no one-size-fits-all.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions will I need? It varies from person to person. Some people find relief in 8–12 sessions; others prefer longer-term work. Your therapist will discuss this with you early on and review it as you go.

Is therapy better than medication for anxiety? Both can be effective, and for some people a combination works best. Therapy helps you build skills and understanding that last beyond the sessions themselves. If you're already taking medication, therapy can work alongside it.

What's the difference between CBT and other approaches? CBT tends to focus on the present — your current thought patterns and behaviours. Psychodynamic therapy looks more at your history and inner world. ACT focuses on values and flexibility rather than changing thoughts directly. We'll help you find what fits.

Do I need a diagnosis to start? No. You don't need a GP referral or a formal diagnosis to work with us. If you feel anxious and it's affecting your life, that's reason enough.

Do you offer online sessions? Yes. All of our therapists offer online sessions, and some offer in-person appointments too.
